When people are looking for the “right” web host they search for hosting plans that give them more for there money , but they usually find plans that are in some way a scam! I ‘ am sure most of you have heard of the term “This sounds to good to be true” which in this case it is. I’ve seen hosts offer Unlimited space on a shared hosting account this is impossible for the simple fact you cant get a server that has “unlimited” space. Besides would you ever use the amount they offer? I’ am sure I couldn’t. Think before you buy!
Why its so cheap?
The reason these web hosts are so cheap is because they “oversell” there servers this means for example the web hosting company has a server that has 800gb space, they could sell 70 accounts with 100gb space, do the math 70×100 that’s 7,000gb space they “claim” to have, now I’ am not saying all web hosting companies “oversell” but you would be surprised just how many do. Some web hosting companies over sell because they think there customers will not even attempt to use the amount of space they offer.
How does this affect you?
Well lets say you buy one of these “outrages” web hosting plans, then you upload say 90gb worth of files, if the webhosting company oversells a lot this could overload there servers which could cause crashes and unhappy customers so what do they do to solve the problem? Buy more servers? you might say. Wrong!
Your files get “ mysteriously ” deleted of there servers, what happens if you didn’t back your files up and you have important work or client information? Or you work from home and that was your job that just went down the drain? They will say something like “There is nothing we can do there was a bug in the server ” and pretty much discard you. Now again I’ am not saying all hosts do this….
Why do they do this?
They have many marketing strategies that are still working today , Web hosts that oversell do this for many reasons one of the reasons is the same reason you might buy there plan in the first place “you want more for your money” this is the same reason they oversell they want to pay less and make more. A good marketing strategy some web hosts use is make there plans “seem” unbeatable, they offer unlimited or 300gb + space this draws a lot of attention and people just cant help there selves and they end up giving in to temptation and ordering the plan.
Solution?
There is an easy solution, do your research. Ask in forums, blogs and websites about the host you are “sniffing” out. I know I’ve been really hyped about getting certain web hosting plan then I ask around and find out the web host is a complete load of garbage. Also be careful many “web hosting review” sites are not legit some earn commission for the sales they give the web host. Now remember “If it sounds to good to be true it probably is!
